Mazda has confirmed that the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, the best-selling two-seater sports car in history, will be officially unveiled this year at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on September 3.
"We're excited to make this official, to announce that the newest member of the MX-5 Miata family will be arriving soon," mentioned Jim O'Sullivan, the president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations (MNAO).
During the 2014 New York International Auto Show, Mazda confirmed that its next-generation roadster would incorporate a SKYACTIV-CHASSIS. The 2016 model itself was not revealed, but enthusiasts have been speculating ever since. Luckily, fans of the little roadster will not have to wait much longer, as Mazda will present the new convertible during simultaneous global events in Japan and Spain, in addition to the United States.
The unveiling of the new 2016 MX-5 Miata will take place just days before the event known as Miatas at Mazda Raceway, which will be held on September 5-7. The convertible will also be on display with “an array of heritage, concept and motorsports MX-5s.”
Mazda’s iconic roadster was initially launched in 1989, and after more than three generations, over 940,000 Mazda MX-5 convertibles have been produced. During the New York Auto Show, a special 25th Anniversary Edition was launched, with only 100 units available in Canada.
The current 2014 model is equipped with a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine, which generates 167 horsepower when coupled with the 5-speed manual transmission. When mated to the optional 6-speed Sport mode automatic, the convertible will produce a total of 158 horsepower.
