CAR DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT MEANING: COLOURS, SYMBOLS & WHAT THEY MEAN

CAR DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT MEANING: COLOURS, SYMBOLS & WHAT THEY MEAN

Car warning lights show what is wrong and how urgent it is. Red means a serious problem and you should stop as soon as it is safe, yellow or amber means a problem needs attention soon but you can usually keep driving, and green, blue, or white means everything is normal and the system is simply active (like lights or cruise control).

Understanding these colours makes it easier to recognize the most common warning lights and what each one actually means.

Are Warning Lights Standard in All Cars?

Most warning symbols follow guidelines from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 2575), which is why many icons look similar across vehicles. However, designs are not identical. Manufacturers may adjust symbols, and regional standards like UNECE and SAE also influence how they appear.

The meaning is mostly consistent, but the exact icon can vary.

What Do Dashboard Light Colours Mean?

  • đź”´ Red: Serious issue that may be unsafe or cause damage. Stop driving as soon as it is safe (engine overheating, low oil pressure, brake or charging issues).
  • 🟡 / đźź  Yellow or amber: Needs attention soon (check engine, low tire pressure, ABS issue). You can usually drive short-term.
  • 🟢 / 🔵 / ⚪ Green, blue, or white: Informational only, showing systems like signals, high beams, or cruise control are active.

Flashing vs. Solid Lights

  • Flashing: Urgent issue—especially check engine. Slow down and get service quickly.
  • Solid: Less urgent but still needs attention.

Most Common Warning Lights

  • Check Engine: Engine or emissions issue, from minor to serious
  • Oil Pressure: Low oil pressure—stop immediately
  • Engine Temperature: Engine overheating—pull over safely
  • TPMS: Tire pressure low
  • ABS: Brake system issue affecting stability control
