In 2026, both the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports independently reached the same conclusion: Mazda is the safest automotive brand on the road. Mazda earned eight IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards — the most of any single automotive brand — and became the first-ever automaker named "Safest New-Car Brand" by Consumer Reports.
IIHS: Eight Top Awards, Tougher Standards
Mazda earned eight TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards from IIHS in 2026 — its highest recognition tier — covering the Mazda3 Sedan, Mazda3 Hatchback, CX-30, CX-50, CX-70, CX-70 PHEV, CX-90, and CX-90 PHEV. This marks the third consecutive year Mazda has led the industry, despite IIHS introducing its most demanding criteria yet: a new highway-speed vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test, stricter rear-seat protection standards, and a requirement that all crash-avoidance technology come standard, not optional. Mazda passed everything across its core lineup. Since 2008, the brand has collected 99 IIHS safety awards, including 73 TOP SAFETY PICK+ — a testament to nearly two decades of continuous improvement and leadership in safety engineering.
Consumer Reports: A Historic First
Consumer Reports named Mazda the first-ever "Safest New-Car Brand" in its newly launched Safety Verdict assessment — a designation no automaker had ever received before. The Safety Verdict goes beyond crash scores, evaluating real-world crashworthiness, emergency handling, control usability, and crash-prevention effectiveness. To qualify, vehicles must also be Consumer Reports-recommended, meaning reliability and road performance matter alongside safety. Mazda's core SUV and sedan lineup led the assessment, with models like the CX-30, CX-50, and Mazda3 each scoring at the top tier.
